On the morning of January 10th 2024, Professor Farid Akhtar, Professor Alberto Vomiero, Senior Lecturer Dr. Shujie You from the Luleå University of Technology in Sweden, and Associate Professor Elisa Moretti from the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Italy visited our school for academic exchange. Tian Feng, Deputy Secretary of the CPC China University of Mining and Technology(CUMT) Committee; Zhang Zhenkang, Head of the International Office of CUMT; leaders of the School of Materials Science and Physics, and representatives of young staff participated in this event.
During the meeting, Tian Feng presented the Friendship Award of the China University of Mining and Technology to Professor Farid Akhtar. Subsequently, Professor Farid Akhtar delivered an acceptance speech, expressing that Luleå University of Technology in Sweden has maintained close academic exchanges with China University of Mining and Technology. He also highlighted the strong relationship between his team and Professor Feng Peizhong. Professor Akhtar highly praised Professor Feng's international awareness and expressed the hope to further strengthen mutual exchanges and cooperation through this event. He also wished that the collaboration between the two universities would provide broader growth opportunities for young teachers on both sides, and he hoped that the younger generation would quickly excel.
Following this, Professor Farid and his delegation had in-depth discussions with the responsible persons from the CUMT's International Cooperation & Exchange Office and the School of Materials and Physics on deepening inter-school cooperation and expanding collaboration areas. They reached agreements on various aspects of cooperation, including student & staff exchange, and research collaboration, within the framework of the UNESCO Chair project led by the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and the Luleå University of Technology.
On the afternoon, the International Frontier Seminar of Materials Science was convened. Professor Alberto Vomiero, Associate Professor Elisa Moretti, and Professor Farid Akhtar have presentations on "Composite nano-systems for energy harvesting," "Design of inorganic nanomaterials for today’s energy and environmental challenges," and "Novel Porous Materials for Decarbonization of Carbon Intensive Industries and Energy Storage," respectively.
The "China University of Mining and Technology Friendship Award" is the highest honor CUMT gives foreign experts, recognizing outstanding contributions to teaching, research, discipline construction, and international education. Farid Akhtar is a professor in the Engineering Materials Research Group at Luleå University of Technology, which is strong in mining, materials, and energy. Professor Farid, along with Professor Feng, obtained the international exchange project funded by the National Natural & Science Foundation of China and the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education in 2015. This collaboration laid the groundwork for MOU cooperation between CUTM-LTU in October 2017. Building on this solid foundation, the professorial teams from both sides secured a Key International (Regional) Cooperation Research Project funded by the National Natural & Science Foundation of China in 2020.
Since the initiation of this collaboration, the two teams have jointly published 39 academic papers in international journals such as Corrosion Science, Dalton Transactions, etc. They have organized several academic conferences, facilitated nearly 30 exchanges of faculty and students, and conducted collaborative activities such as specialized lectures. This collaboration has injected fresh momentum into the cooperation and exchange between the two mining-focused universities in China and Sweden.
